LISTEN TO ‘SINCE U BEEN GONE’ HERE
Have you noticed that most of the movie trailers these days use some kind of dark, epic, orchestral cover of older, famous songs? Obsessed with this innovative style, singer Moana A and film composer Daniel Belardinelli created this haunting cover of Kelly Clarkson’s pop/rock anthem “Since U Been Gone.”
Singer, songwriter Moana (that is her real name, sorry Disney) grew up on a sailboat in Saint Martin. She graduated from Berklee College of Music summa cum laude in 2011. Her first original album “dotted” was crowdfunded via IndieGogo in 2013, and followed by an endorsement deal with Daisy Rock Guitars. Based in LA, she regularly makes time to tour the world: Abu Dhabi, Indonesia, India, the Mediterranean region, the Caribbean, and all over the USA. She’s also a session singer for several projects, including the YouTube hit kids’ show Badanamu.
Daniel Belardinelli is a film and television composer based in Los Angeles. Originally from Venezuela, he obtained his Masters Degree in Composition at NYU. His music has been featured in Duplass Brothers-produced LAMB by Ross Partridge featuring Oona Lawrence, which premiered in SXSW; Don’t Let Me Drown directed by Cruz Angeles, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in the US Dramatic Competition; Blood Brothers, by Alexi Tan, produced by legendary Director John Woo and Terence Chang (the film closed the 64th Edition of the Venice Film Festival, screened at the Toronto Film Festival and was theatrically released Worldwide); ABC's crime-drama Final Witness; ESPN's Emmy-nominated documentary series 30 for 30; the score for Coasterville (an interactive social game for Zynga Studios with over 15 million users worldwide); the theatrical and TV campaign for the film The Post, directed by Steven Spielberg; Catfish; 16 and Pregnant; Keeping Up with The Kardashians; I am Cait; Vice’s on HBO Special Report Countdown to Zero, and more. Daniel is also a member of Duomo, a composer team with Berlin-based composer Axel Tenner. They have released 4 albums published by Position Music, with tracks featured in trailers for films such as Steven Spielberg’s “The Post”, Keira Knightley’s “Colette,” and several HBO and Netflix documentaries.
How did such an unlikely collaboration happen? One night, Moana sat at her piano with the idea of changing the notes and the melody of Since U Been Gone from major to minor, forcing the confident words to sound almost sarcastic. She recorded it on a voice memo on her phone and sent it to Daniel, who built a whole cinematic world around it. Adding hits on orchestral drums and strings really transformed the song into something completely different. He even added a whole new section after the bridge, which starts innocently with some peaceful, calming harp notes and vocal “hmm’s.” But they quickly pass through some dissonant pitches that resolve right away, creating suspense, letting you know that something is not quite right, like they would in a film score. The song sounds like a painful memory: strong feelings illustrated by the loud belting in the bridge, but shadowed by the ever-present vulnerability. The original version of “Since U Been Gone” is full of high, gritty, powerful notes. Moana and Daniel wanted to keep that aspect of the song, while making it far-less optimistic. This heavily emotionally-charged cover will soon be followed by more orchestral pop crossover covers. Stay tuned!
